Guesthouses instead of resorts
The Maldives offer two different holidays. One is an overwater villa at €800 a night. The other is a guesthouse on a local island at €60, with the same ocean outside.
Where to go
- Maafushi — the most developed, plenty of dive centres
- Thoddoo — its own bikini beach and turtles in the lagoon
- Dhigurah — the quietest, with the reef right off the shore
Ferries between islands cost a couple of dollars but do not run daily — plan the hops in advance.
