Flame-coloured waves of rock and beams of light falling from above. The difference between Upper and Lower canyon, and how to plan the trip.

Antelope Canyon: how to see America’s most photogenic canyon

Antelope Canyon is in Arizona near the town of Page, on Navajo land. You can only go in with a local guide, so tours are booked ahead.

Upper or Lower

  • Upper canyon is at ground level and easy to walk. This is where the famous light beams appear around midday in summer.
  • Lower canyon means climbing down metal stairs into a narrow slot. It is usually less crowded.

When to go

The light beams in the Upper canyon show roughly from late March to early October, in the middle of the day.

Getting there

The nearest big airports are Las Vegas and Phoenix. From Las Vegas it is about 4–5 hours by car. Stop at Horseshoe Bend, five minutes from Page.

You need a US visa, so start the application early.
